JONATHAN TROTTO: The firm was started by my father, Christopher Trotto, about 30 years ago. I took over about a year and a half ago and about 75 percent of my practice is divorce and custody.

Divorce is definitely a very emotional process, so my job is to take care of the legal issues involved and also help deal with the emotional issues. But there are other times when I know someone isn't ready for a divorce, then I advise them what they need to do financially, or if they really want to try and salvage the marriage what they can do.

There are many factors involved in divorce and custody. Divorce is the first step. Everything else is the ancillary issues, which are equitable distribution and child custody. Equitable distribution is New York's way of dividing property. All property is involved in equitable distribution. And it can be a 50/50 split, sometimes it can be 60/40. It can be adjusted depending on what's fair.

My firm is focused on family. I genuinely care about my clients and I'm not doing this because I have to do it, I do this because I want to do it.
